MINNEAPOLIS -- Out of the doghouse and into the end zone, Cordarrelle Pattersons career renaissance kicked into overdrive on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.Patterson returned a kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown to put the Vikings in control of the game, and also had four catches for 53 yards in Minnesotas 30-24 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.Once thought of as the dynamic playmaker who would take over as a focal point of the Vikings offense once Adrian Peterson was ready to retire, the 2013 first-round draft choice entered the season hanging on to a roster spot for dear life. He had two catches for 10 yards all of last season, then watched the Vikings spend a first-round draft choice on another receiver before declining to pick up the fifth-year option on Pattersons contract later in the summer.Over the span of 10 games in a contract year, Patterson has gone from an afterthought in the offense to a featured element. In addition to his return and receiving duties on Sunday, Patterson took a read-option handoff from Jerick McKinnon to get the defense focused on him, then flipped the ball to quarterback Sam Bradford in a play that drew a penalty downfield and set up a Vikings touchdown. When youre involved, you cant even sleep at night, Patterson said. Last night I couldnt even sleep because I was just so excited about today. I knew it was going to be a good game for me, man. Ive got a couple friends in town and I told them its going to be a good game for me.He also converted a third-and-1 with a 30-yard reception that set up another touchdown, and opened the second half with his fifth career kickoff return TD, which ties him with Percy Harvin for the most in Vikings history. When you look what he does on special teams, when the balls in his hands, you just feel like hes one of those guys if we can get him five, six, however many touches it is a game, you know that hes going to create something positive, Bradford said. Anytime the balls in his hands, hes got a chance to take it all the way. When the Vikings drafted Laquon Treadwell in April and declined Pattersons contract option, the writing appeared to be on the wall for a player whose physical tools were never questioned, but whose carefree personality led to doubts about him as a consistent threat on offense. Pattersons good friend Adam Thielen, an undrafted player out of Division II Minnesota State, Mankato, had surpassed him on the receiver depth chart. His future was uncertain.Nicknamed Flash both for his blazing speed and his colorful personality, Patterson first showed coaches that he was playing with a different attitude when he started covering punts as a gunner. Its one of the most thankless tasks on the field. He forced a key fumble against the Giants and gradually started earning more playing time on offense as well. The approach endeared him to no-nonsense coach Mike Zimmer, and Patterson has seen his role grow each week. Its been cool to see him have success because Ive seen what he does in the offseason, said Thielen, who had five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Ive seen how positive he is. Its easy for guys in his situation to not have that mindset and not work hard. But its good to see when guys deserve it and they go out and make it happen. The Vikings never needed Patterson more than Sunday, when they carried a four-game losing streak into a crucial home game. Patterson broke out some socks with his own likeness on them -- Last night I was packing my bag and said hey, I need to pack these, he said -- and broke the game open with a kick return that gave the Vikings a 27-17 lead.Tonight Im going to sleep like a baby, he said with a wide smile. DALLAS -- The Philadelphia Flyers arent getting caught up in their current win streak.Philadelphia (19-10-3) has won 10 straight games for the third time in franchise history and is looking extend the hot streak against the Dallas Stars (12-14-6) on Saturday at American Airlines Center. While many teams are superstitious and avoid talking about winning streaks, the Flyers are embracing it and openly talking about a mark they hope to push to 11 games.Ive never been part of anything like that, its been absolutely amazing, Flyers right wing Jakub Voracek said. Youve got to enjoy it while it lasts ... it shows you how good we play this season, enjoy it.The Flyers last won 10 straight games in 1985.Philadelphia has been the hottest team in the league for a month and special teams have been a key factor. It is second in the NHL on the power play and converting at 23.5 percent. The Flyers scored on three of their four power plays against the Stars on Dec 10. Claude Giroux leads the NHL with 15 power-play points. Wayne Simmonds is second in the league with 14 power-play points and leads the NHL with eight goals with the man advantage.Weve all played together for a long time, Simmonds said. Its kind of like second nature with the puck and knowing where all your options are. We often have two to four options per guy, no matter who has the puck. I think thats the key for us and makes it a lot easier. The Stars are on the other end of the spectrum and trying to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday. After entering the season as one of the trendy picks to reach the Stanley Cup Finals, the Stars are outside of the playoff picture after 32 games and the offense hasnt been firing on a consistent basis.dddddddddddd.Its been particularly frustrating on the power play, where the Stars had looks but couldnt convert on five opportunities against the Rangers. We need results now, Stars forward Jason Spezza said. Id much rather have a an ugly 2-for-5 (on the power play) than a pretty 0-for-5.Dallas will be without center Cody Eakin, who was suspended four games by the NHL Player for charging Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. With Eakin out, Spezza will move back to his traditional role of center, while Curtis McKenzie will be back in the lineup after missing back-to-back games with an upper-body injury.McKenzie had four points in his past five games before he sustained the injury. It was a bit frustrating with how I had been playing, McKenzie said. I feel good (today). I was able to keep skating with the injury, so it wont be that big of an adjustment. The Stars are expected to give Antti Niemi another start in goal after he had a strong start against the Rangers. Niemi is 6-2-1 at American Airlines Center this season and has a 1.89 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.Niemi will likely go up against Steve Mason in the Philadelphia goal. Mason has won his last eight starts and rebounded from a tough start to the season, where he once had a 5-8-3 record. IRVING, Texas -- Keegan Bradley again bogeyed Nos. 1 and 18 in the second round of the Byron Nelson Championship. Unlike the first round, Bradley didnt set a course record. But he still finished with a three-stroke lead. Bradley started and ended his round Friday with those bogeys, part of a 1-under 69 that got him to 11-under 129, the lowest 36-hole total at the Nelson since 2001. "Im almost more proud of this round than yesterday because I didnt feel comfortable all day," said Bradley, whose opening 60 included his only bogeys at those same holes in the middle of that round. "I dont know what it was, I cant put my finger on it but, you know, I bogeyed the first hole. I was a little uncomfortable and then I settled in and hit some really good shots." Tom Gillis, who shot 63 in the first group of the day off the No. 10 tee, and Sang-Moon Bae (66) were tied for second. A stroke further back were 2012 PGA Tour rookie of the year John Huh (64), Ryan Palmer (68) and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel (70). Schwartzel had an opening 63 and was the closest to Bradley after the first round. "It was a bit up and down out there," said Schwartzel, who had three birdies and three bogeys. "Bit of a frustrating day, but I suppose its the mix." Bradley, whose first PGA Tour victory came as a rookie at the Nelson two years ago, started his second round with a drive that missed the fairway at the 458-yard first hole, then left his approach short of the green. "The first hole is probably the easiest hole out here," he said. "I dont know why I keep making bogey on that hole." At No. 18, he drove right into rough under the trees again near a cart path. He punched the ball, which rolled and flirted with water to the left before settling into a swale behind the green. He chipped to 6 1/2 feet, but missed the par putt. "Ive got a four-shot lead, so the last thing I wanted to do was plop it in the water. I bailed out," said Bradley, who also won the PGA Championship in 2011 and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational last year. "I didnt hit that bad of a shot it just got in the wind. I thought it was going to be way left of where it was, but Im going to hit good ones Saturday and Sunday." In between those bogeys, Bradley had another bogey at No. 6, four birdies and several nice par-saving shots, including a two-putt from 35 feet after driving into the trees at No. 14 and a blast to 4 feet of the hole from a greenside bunker at No. 15. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., shot his second straight 67, and is five back at 134. Calgarys Stephen Ames is another shot back after turning in a 68. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., had a second straight 68, and is seven back at 136. Ottawas Brad Fritsch just made the cut at 140 with a 71. Guan Tianlang, the 14-year-old amateur from China, missed the cut with rounds of 70 and 77. After driving into the rough and then hitting into two bunkers for a double-bogey 6 at No. 12, his third hole Friday, Guan had a 19-foot birdie putt on the following par 3. He then had five consecutive bogeys. Guan last month made the cut at the Masters and then again in New Orleans, becoming the youngest player ever to make the cut on the PGA Tour. He said he "probably" would stay in the United States to play more golf, but wasnt specific about where or confirm if he would play in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier June 3. Defending Nelson champion Jason Dufner, playing with good friend Bradley, had his second consecutive 70 to make the cut of even par. Gillis got rolling with three consecutive birdies, starting with a 13-foot putt at No. 12 before burying a 32-footer on the 180-yard par 3 right after that. His only bogey came at his closing hole, when he three-putted from 12 1/2 feet at the 427-yard ninth hole. He had played an afternoon round Thursday, when 13 players shot 66 or better in the morning and the only one in the afternoon was Marc Leishman with a 66. "It was easier, I think the wind was down and I was hoping that we would get a fair shot like they had (Thursday) morning just to see what it would be like," Gillis said. "Definitely, I thought it played better than in the afternoon." After 1 1/2 inches of rain fell on the course Wednesday night, players were allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls hit in fairways and other short-cut areas. That rule remained in place Friday, even though the grounds were dry and the greens were firming up with more breezy conditions. Two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton matched Gillis for the best round Friday, his 63 a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round to put him in a tie for 13th. Gillis had missed his last five cuts with 12 straight rounds without breaking 70 before his opening 1-under 69 even while bogeys on three of his last four holes. Asked about what was different this week, Gillis said he was more relaxed after reuniting with his coach. "I stepped with a way for a couple of months and tried to do some things on my own and kind of got lost," Gillis said before explaining their separation. "We had disagreements on some things. ... You talk things out, work things out. People change. I think he was right all along, to be honest with you." Bae, the 26-year-old South Korean who has 11 international victories but none on the PGA Tour, had six birdies and in his second 66 in a row. "That was a little weird, I thought this course was very windy, but (Thursday) morning was really good weather," Bae said. "So yeah, different, but I shoot same score as (Thursday), so Im happy." http://www.officialraidersgear.com/Raiders-Justin-Ellis-Draft-Jersey/ . NEW YORK -- South Carolina coach Frank Martin savored his teams victory over No. 25 Michigan and then went straight to the videotape. While his team enjoyed a flight to New York, Martin watched film of his last game at Kansas State -- a loss to Syracuse in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. He discovered everything his former team did wrong against the Oranges zone defense and vowed the Gamecocks would not repeat those miscues. They didnt and sprinkled in some dominating defense.Sindarius Thornwell scored 16 points as South Carolina had enough offense to go along with its defense and never trailed in its 64-50 victory over No. 18 Syracuse on Saturday in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational at Barclays Center.I slept on it and I said `Ive got to change what I did and you saw we ran the bigs kind of up to the elbows, Martin said. We needed to lift the big up to the zone rather than try behind it. Once we lift the zone then find the cracks behind it so we can have space to shoot.Credit our guys. I dont claim to be Einstein. I just try to do my job. They listened, they were in tune (and) they executed.South Carolina shot 45 percent and scored 30 points in the paint. The Gamecocks scored most of their points after frequently getting defensive stops via 12 steals and 17 Syracuse turnovers.Every game we come out and guard, thats what our coaching staff and our team prides itself on, defense, South Carolina guard PJ Dozier said. We make our offense out of our defense. The Gamecocks effectiveness at getting through Syracuses zone and forcing turnovers resulted in their second win in three seasons against a Top 25 team in Brooklyn. On Jan. 2, 2014, South Carolina had a 64-60 victory over No. 9 Iowa State.Thornwell made 9 of 10 free throws. He also had six rebounds, five assists, three steals and was named the MVP of the Invitational.Maik Kotsar also had 16 points for South Carolina (6-0) while Dozier added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Gamecocks, who gave up 12 of the first 18 rebounds but finished with a 37-30 margin on the glass.Tyler Lydon led the Orange (4-1) with a season-high 18 points. Andrew White III and Frank Howard added 10 points apiece as Syracuse shot 31.8 percent. They were just really good defensively, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. They pressured you, they got in the lane. They just really are a good defensive team. We knew that because we saw the Michigan game and Michigan is probably as good an offensive movement team as anybody against man-to-man in the country and they couldnt get anything.Lydon hit a 3-pointer with 17:05 remaining to get Syracuse within 40-32. Following a defensive stop, Lydon had another basket forcing South Carolina to call time out.Two free throws by White cut the deficit to 47-43 with 11:39 remaining but the Orange went nearly 5 minutes without a point while Howard missed four free throws and Lydon missed an open 3-pointer.The drought ended when White hit a 3-pointer to make it 51-46 with about 6 1/2 minutes left.Following Whites 3-pointer, the Gamecocks gradually restored the double-digit lead they held late in the first half. South Carolina took a 57-47 lead on a basket by Kotsar with about 3 minutes left and finished off the win at the free throw line.BIG PICTURE:South Carolina: South Carolinas defense continued to hold teams to low shooting percentages and it could make the Gamecocks difficult to play against for other SEC teams. The Gamecocks have held teams under 40 percent in each of their six games.Syracuse: Lydon can take over at times and did not disappoint for at least the two NBA scouts in attendance to watch him.OFFENSIVE WOES:How bad was Syracuses offense? The Orange were outscored by their football counterparts who lost 76-61 to Pittsburgh on Saturday.POLL IMPLICATIONS:The Gamecocks were not one of 16 teams to receive any Top 25 votes last week. That should change after South Carolina remained unbeaten with wins over No. 25 Michigan and No. 18 Syracuse.Syracuse will likely stay in the poll though it is unlikely the Orange will remain at No. 18. Out of the teams behind them in the poll, Baylor and Iowa State remained undefeated and likely will move ahead of the Orange in the next poll.HONORING PEARL WASHINGTON: Before the national anthem, there was a moment of silence of former Syracuse guard Dwayne Pearl Washington, who died of brain cancer on April 20. Syracuse is the midst of a 31-day campaign to honor Washingtons memory. The campaign culminates Dec. 17 when Syracuse hosts former Big East rival Georgetown. Before his three seasons at Syracuse from 1983 to 1986, Washington attended Boys and Girls High School, which is located about 2 1/2 miles east of Barclays Center.UP NEXT:South Carolina hosts Vermont on Dec. 1.Syracuse is at No. 16 Wisconsin on Tuesday in ACC/Big Ten Challenge.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25. When I was a kid, my mum coached our netball team. Shed never played, and taught herself the rules with a tattered paperback shed borrowed from the library. She only signed up because nobody else would. At first I was proud she was so committed to my sporting life that shed coach a game shed never played. But that soon changed. Some days it was the best having her around. She was funny and kind and the other girls loved her. But some days I hated how being the coachs daughter made me stand apart. Plus, her obsession with fairness meant I rarely played the position I wanted, lest it be seen as favoritism. And I could forget ever winning most valuable player. So when my daughter started a netball team and they needed a coach, I fled. The last thing I wanted was for my daughter to feel as confused as Id felt as a teenager. My feelings about all that changed quickly. My mum, whod been fighting?cancer for 18 months, died. Suddenly, my rock, someone Id relied on, was gone. That hit home when I undertook the wrenching task of sorting through her possessions and a million memories surfaced. Among them, a photograph?of her and I taken on the day we won our first netball championship back in 1982. I was 12, tall and slim with a long ponytail and a grin from ear to ear. Mum was next to me, wearing a grin equal to my own. I hadnt seen that photo for a long time. And it rocked me. It made me realize that I wasnt just grieving my mums death, I was grieving the loss of being a child. With her gone, nobody knew when my first tooth had fallen out, or how I cried after my boyfriend dumped me. That part of my history was lost. I ached for some connection to it. I hoped that maybe if I could coach like she had, some link to my past would still live.At the first few training sessions I was terrified. The kids were learning the game, I was learning how to coach, and somewhere a ghost of my mum hovered on the sidelines smiling at the whole catastrophe. When my daughter flashed a look of fury my way during a game, I realized we needed some ground rules. I agreed that fairness meant letting her play the position she liked as often as the rest of the girls, and she agreed not to think she could get away with stuff just because we were related.Coaching was something I took on for personal reasons, to try to be close to a mum who was no longer here. I never expected to actually enjoy it. Three years in, I have discovered more about myself than I thought possible.Ive rediscovered a love of netball and now play again in an adult team. Ive uncovered a love of teaching and most weeks look forward to training nights when I can help the girls to learn new skills and strive to improve. And Ive realized that mum never coached to learn about netball, or to help us win championships. She coached to be close to me and show she cared. Even if Im not the greatest coach in the world, thats exactly why Im doing it too.Thats what I lost when she died. Not my childhood memories or a connection to my past, but someone to teach me how to be a mother. Perhaps by finding that photograph my mums parenting choices and style have found a way to live on. Just like netball gave mum and I the way to share belonging to a team, I now get to share my daughters special world. It also gives me rare insight into her friendships and closeness with her friends that I wouldnt otherwise have. They call me (affectionately, I hope) the hugger, because so often with a tween-aged team of 10 girls, there are tears. Someone is always feeling something strongly, and more often than not my role is to sit, listen and counsel. I not only coach them netball skills but also friendship skills. When mum died an old friend that I hadnt seen in many years contacted me via email. She told me how jealous shed been of my relationship with my mum when she was a teenager, because my mum was one of those involved mums who was always there, and always approachable. I think coaching did that.At the time I never noticed, but now that Im in the same boat, I see how lucky I am. Granted my daughter doesnt always like that Im her coach, but sometimes she does, and for now, those rare times are enough. Hopefully when shes grown up and Im gone, shell look back as fondly as I do and maybe coach her daughters team too.Nova Weetman lives in Melbourne, Australia. MARSEILLE, France -- Its a case of too little too late for Robert Lewandowski.Polands star player finally broke his European Championship drought but it wasnt enough to keep Poland in the tournament.A night that started spectacularly for the Poland captain with a goal after just one minute and 40 seconds -- the second fastest in any European Championship -- ended in frustration and heartbreak as his team lost on penalties to Portugal in their quarterfinal at the Stade Velodrome. Its painful, said Lewandowski, who found the net just once in France after scoring 13 times in qualifiers. Football is a very brutal competition.Add the 27-year-old Bayern Munich striker to a list of stars who failed to shine at Euro 2016.Zlatan Ibrahimovic didnt score as Sweden crashed out at the group stage and immediately announced his international retirement.Harry Kane went home goalless and fellow England striker Jamie Vardy managed just one strike as England fell short in the round of 16 -- not the way either would have wanted their stellar club seasons to end.Portugals Cristiano Ronaldo did score a memorable brace against Hungary but hes been below par for most of the tournament. On Thursday he was particularly out of sorts, uncharacteristically squandering two good chances when he missed the ball altogether. But Ronaldo can at least look forward to putting things right as Portugal heads to a July 6 semifinal against Wales or Belgium in Lyon.Lewandowski is going home.If anything, Lewandowskis scoring woes underscored the gulf in quality between some teams in qualifying and those that made it to the tournament, even in its expanded 24-team format. His qualification tally came in part because Poland was in a group that included Gibraltar and Georgia. The Bayern Munich striker scored six of his goals against Gibraltar and three against Georgia -- a hat-trick that came in the final five minutes of the match. He managed just one goal in two qualification matches against world champion Germany. He didnt have any problems finding the net in the German Bundesliga season, scoring 30 goals as Bayern romped to another title, becoming the first man since 1977 to score 30 in a season. But on Thursday, Portugals center back pairing of Pepe and Jose Fonte shadowed his every move and rarely gave him a clear sight of goal beyond his classy side-footed finish in the second minute. His intelligent runs carved out more early chances, but the goal was as good as it got for Lewandowski until he converted his spot kick in the penalty shootout that Portugal won 5-3 after Jakub Blaszczykowski had his effort well-saved by Rui Patricio.Poland coach Adam Nawalka insisted he was happy with his captains performances, saying that Lewandowskis play is about much more than just goals.Robert Lewandowski is still and always will be a huge player for this team, Nawalka said. Hes the captain; he motivates players on the pitch and off the pitch. His behavior is something that I can only praise. Now Poland and Lewandowski will look to build on whats widely perceived back home as a relatively successful European Championship campaign during qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.Thats a much harder path than the European Championship qualifiers, Lewandowski said. A new round of games is near in the next two, three months and we will again have to give the maximum. One positive Lewandowski can take from Thursdays defeat: Portugals 18-year-old prodigy Renato Sanches, who scored his teams equalizer, will be playing alongside him at Bayern next season. Mauricio Pochettino declared himself very disappointed after Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Leicester on Saturday. Vincent Janssen gave Spurs the lead from the penalty spot late in the first half, but Ahmed Musa levelled after the break with Leicesters only shot on target.Spurs have now drawn three successive games in the Premier League and have not won in five matches in all competitions. We were very disappointed with the way we conceded the goal, Spurs boss Pochettino told Sky Sports. They had only one shot on target, all the stats are in our favour, and we feel very disappointed after that game.We always try and go forward, we created chances but we were not clinical in front of goal. Watch highlights of the match We deserved more, we played better and were the team always trying to win the game. Its a bit of a shame that we only took one point. Its an important point for them but we have lost two points. One positive from the game was summer signing Janssen netting his first league goal, albeit from the penalty spot.I have been happy with him from when he arrived, said Pochettino. We are happy with the way he is playing. I understand it is a lot of pressure because Harry [Kane] is injured, but he works very hard every day.Spurs will be hoping that Kane is fit to return from injury next weekend as they travel to north London rivals Arsenal.Toby Alderweireld could also be in contention to feature, although Pochettino said: We will see, it might be difficult for Bayer Leverkusen [in the Champions League in midweek], but maybe Arsenal. Batiste, who briefly signed with the Eskimos in 2006, has spent time with several NFL teams including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins. Evelyn Stevens burst into professional cycling with an irresistible backstory, an ideal engine for endurance and -- as she was always quick to mention -- the very rawest of bike-handling skills.?Shell end her career seven years later at the world championships tucked into the precise formation of one of the sports top teams in its most technical event.?Stevens, 33, never could have imagined the topography of the path from her former desk on Wall Street to Sundays team time trial in Doha, Qatar.?Hooked after entering a cyclocross race on a whim, Stevens signed up for a road cycling clinic in New Yorks Central Park in 2008. The following year, she quit her job in investment banking, sold or gave away most of her possessions and began pedaling toward parts unknown.?She signed her first pro contract before the 2010 season and learned racing from the ground up, sometimes literally. Along the way, she carved out an identity as one of the most versatile riders in the peloton: a time trialist and climber as well as an intrepid super-domestique who helped other riders close out victories.I rode for the best teams, with the best women and the best equipment, Stevens said from Nice, France, where she was training for worlds last week. Theres no event that I didnt do that I wanted to do. I didnt accomplish all of my goals, but I got the chance to go after them.?A two-time U.S. individual time trial champion and double world championship time trial medalist (silver in 2012, bronze in 2014), Stevens also won the prestigious La Fleche Wallonne one-day classic and several stage races around the world. But her distinction was as a rider who drew her own finish lines.?In 2014, frustrated by the arbitrary length restrictions on womens stage races, she devised her own Grand Tour, stringing together 17 consecutive race days in Europe starting with the womens Giro Rosa and continuing with Germanys Thüringen Rundfahrt, which she won.?Last February, Stevens set a new womens hour record -- covering 47.980 kilometers in the allotted time -- in Colorado Springs, an accomplishment that drew 50,000 viewers on a livestream. She still cant believe that many people wanted to watch her ride around in circles.?Looking back on it, it was insane I even thought to do that, she said. Im gonna go out and ride for an hour, close to 48k, have everybody watching me -- pretty much all you can do is fail. Now Im so proud of it, as I get farther away from it. Proud of the result, taking that risk, the experience, the people around me who helped me with it. Its a lovely process to get to these goals.?It was a process Stevens knew nothing about as a wide-eyed newbie whose only prior team experience was as a tenacious baseliner on the Dartmouth College tennis team. She was initially stunned that teams employed someone to fill her water bottles and do her laundry, but she got used to it.?Other adaptations came a lot harder. It took years for Stevens to feel comfortable in the tight quarters of the peloton. She forced herself to fight crosswinds and navigate wet roads, but bad-weather riding was never her strong suit. She refiined her descending skills by following young superstar Taylor Phinney on the roads around Boulder, Colorado -- part of the Phinney familys larger embrace that included mentorship and a second home.dddddddddddd?Stevens carved careful tracks down the ski slopes of her youth rather than schussing down at full speed. Much about road cycling remained a mental stretch for her naturally risk-averse personality. Every day I got on the bike, I was facing fears, she said.?Those fears came partially to fruition in March 2013, when Stevens crashed heavily on a traffic circle in a race in Italy. She suffered a concussion and required 40 stitches and some dental work to reconstruct one of the most contagious smiles in cycling.?Stevens had a quiet Olympics in Rio. She rode valiantly in support of Mara Abbotts heart-cracking fourth-place effort in the road race, but blustery conditions on the day of the time trial thwarted her quest for a medal in her second Summer Games.?She is leaving the sport with no regrets, including her late introduction to it. Stevens was comfortable in her own skin, if not always in the saddle, when she dedicated herself to cycling in her mid-20s. She knew she always had the safety net of a college education and work experience if things didnt work out.?Stevens success obviated the need for that exit strategy until now. Shes contemplating picking back up in the financial field, although she frets at the thought of a more sedentary lifestyle and already envisions fidgeting at a standing desk. Mostly, shes looking forward to more time in San Francisco with her husband of one year, Brett Baker, a program manager at Twitter.?I think what made me a successful bike racer and made me who I am on the bike is the fact that I started late, Stevens said. I had to really play catch-up. It made for some big struggles on the bike. Maybe if Id started when I was 15 years old I would have been more comfortable in the corners. But would I actually have gotten myself in that position??She automatically qualified for the road race in Doha, but declined the spot. Her farewell will come with the Netherlands-based Boels-Dolmans team in the team time trial, which is contested by trade teams rather than national squads. Stevens was a member of Specialized-lululemons three straight gold-medal lineups in the event from 2012 to 14 and would love to go out on another winning note with Boels-Dolmans, the 2015 TTT silver medalist.?Im prepping for the team time trial, but Ive stepped back and realized how intense that lifestyle can be, she said. I started to itch for something else, to try another challenge.?I know I could physically continue to compete at the top level for a lot more time. But I almost feel like Im getting comfortable and kinda have figured out how to do it, and thats when you need to go. I love riding my bicycle. Not one ounce of me is sick of riding my bike. Now, do I want to go with 200 women and [speed] down a small street in Holland? No. Im done. PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- This banner. This arena. These two teams. Its not hard to imagine that this is where destiny meets disappointment. Or where hope meets reality. The Pittsburgh Penguins raising of their 2015-16 Stanley Cup banner to the rafters of the newly named PPG Paints Arena Thursday night was first and foremost a testament to the teams recent history. The teams championship last June came after a tumultuous regular season that saw a coaching change and myriad questions about the teams character all answered emphatically when they downed the San Jose Sharks in six games in the Stanley Cup finals. For those reasons, its an achievement that will never be forgotten, the banner a constant reminder of that time. But the moment the banner stopped fluttering high above the Penguins logo, that shiny piece of history was quickly be placed aside in pursuit of something else historic: a second straight championship. We dont need to think about [repeating], GM Jim Rutherford said. Its hard to win one. We know that. We all know its hard to win two. But one of the things [coach Mike Sullivan] is continually saying is, Lets just play.Lets just play. And play they did Thursday night, with the Penguins ultimately coming out on top of a wildly entertaining affair 3-2 in a shootout to open their defense of the Cup.The witness to the festivities -- actually, they came out shortly after the banner had made its trip north to the arena rafters -- the Washington Capitals?couldnt have been more perfectly chosen as the team to face the Pens on this festive night. The Capitals and their captain, Alex Ovechkin, have played the foil to Sidney Crosbys Penguins throughout the past decade, during which the Pens have won two championships. The Capitals are still looking for their first franchise Cup win.Whether or not the schedule makers did it on purpose, I dont know, said Capitals forward Justin Williams, a three-time Cup champion himself. But he admitted there is a sour feeling being the other team on a night of banners and celebrations of past glories, especially when those glories came at the expense of the Capitals.Last season, the Capitals roared through the regular season finishing 16 points ahead of the Penguins atop the Metropolitan Division and won the Presidents Trophy as the top team in the NHL. They won it every which way: heavy, fast, high-scoring, button-down. And when the two teams met in the second round, the first time in the postseason the two teams had met in the Crosby-Ovechkin era since an epic seven-game second-round series in 2009, there was a crackle at what might unfold.Even though the Caps won Game 1, they seemed to chase the series throughout, ultimately bowing out in overtime in Game 6 in this very building. So, cruel joke or not, it was indeed fitting the schedule makers gave the Capitals the task of waiting out the pregame ceremonies and cheers and appearance of the Stanley Cup one last time before the start of a new season.Indeed, as much as theres been a constant magnetism between the two teams since captains Ovechkin and Crosby, who missed Thursdays game while recovering from a concussion, came into the league in 2005, there is much that binds them this season. Both will have to guard against looking too far ahead and wanting too much to prove themselves before the time for proving is at hand. After we won it, its a little bit easier to not rush the process, said Penguins center Eric Fehr, who might have the best perspectivve on the dynamic that exists between being a champion and being perpetually disappointed, having been a first-round draft pick of the Capitals in 2003.ddddddddddddI think when you lose out, youre extra hungry to try to force that getting into playoffs. I think, for us, were just taking it every game to trying to make sure we prove why we were the champions. No team has repeated as Stanley Cup champions since the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings. The team before that? The Penguins, in 1991 and 1992.Phil Bourque was a defenseman on those two Cup winners in the early 1990s. Few know this Pittsburgh team as well as Bourque -- now an analyst on the teams radio broadcasts -- and in spite of the fact that the team will begin the 2016-17 season without Crosby, Bourque believes they might be as well-poised to repeat as champions as anyone since that Hall of Fame-laden team in Detroit almost two decades ago.The leadership core is rock-solid, and they might have the best one-two goaltending tandem in the league with Marc-Andre Fleury, who was excellent making 39 saves Thursday while playoff sensation Matt Murray?is recovering from a broken hand. But theres the group of hungry youths who were so critical to the Penguins playoff success in the form of Bryan Rust, Conor Sheary, Tom Kuhnhackl and Brian Dumoulin. All the pieces are in place, from up top all the way down, Bourque said. But this smartly played, emotional game Thursday was also a reminder that the Caps have legitimate claims on defying history, mostly their own. There are so many attributes from top-end coaching and management to the defending Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby, who was outstanding Thursday, to perennial goal-scoring champion Ovechkin, to three-time Stanley Cup champion Williams, to emerging star Evgeny Kuznetsov and the inextinguishable Nicklas Backstrom. If there is such a thing as destiny, is this time for Washingtons to reveal itself?Ovechkin admitted a different emotion came with being on hand for the Pens banner raising.I wish we had this position in Washington, but we didnt, Ovechkin admitted. Hope this year were going to do it. ... I think its time for us.Veteran NHLer Mike Rupp likewise believes the Capitals are a team capable of finally breaking through and winning it all. But he cautioned that the challenge for them might be more mental than anything. When a team has as dominating a season as the Capitals did last season, so many times thats your opportunity, Rupp said. Individually, thats your year to win.But they didnt. Theyll have to deal with that.I think everyones kind of tired of talking about what-ifs and you guys were so good here, why cant you do that, Williams said. I think this season you just want to let the play speak for itself. Sure, well have to answer questions. Its just part of the history of whats happened [in Washington], but I think just kind of focus on letting the play speak for itself. We love our team as we did last year, and I think were even better this year. And really, hes right.Apart from the not winning part, whats not to love?Just as theres much to love about the Penguins and their bid to defy history and raise back-to-banners.And watching these two powerful teams trade chances Thursday night, it was hard not to imagine that at some point next spring that their destinies will once again be intertwined. We really thought it was best for me.Fournette, the No. 1 prospect on ESPN analyst Todd McShays board for the 2017 NFL draft, previously had announced that he would enter the draft after the season ended.LSU will play Louisville in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.This will be the fifth game this season that Fournette, a junior, has missed. He has been hampered by a lingering ankle injury -- a high- and low-ankle sprain, plus a bone bruise -- that he initially suffered in an August scrimmage. He managed to rush for 843 yards and eight touchdowns in seven games, but rarely looked like the Heisman Trophy candidate who ran for a school-record 1,953 yards a season ago.Im not a quitter at all, said Fournette, who earned second-team All-SEC honors despite missing half the season. I tried to play through the injury as best as I could. So it was hard knowing that the hard work that I put in didnt build up to the season.Fournette said the ankle is now 85 to 90 percent healthy after sitting out since the Tigers Nov. 19 loss to Florida. Its getting better, Fournette said. Over time that we had break, I was just going to rehab, going to see the doctors and stuff, so its getting better. The New Orleans native called it a hurtful feeling that he was unable to play a full season and contend for a national championship in his final season at his home-state school. But Orgeron pointed to the impact Fournette had on the LSU program. He singled out Fournettes 228-yard, three-touchdown game against Auburn last season, and a 284-yard effort on just 16 carries against Ole Miss this fall.We are grateful for all the years Leonard gave us, all the great memories, all the great games, Orgeron said. One of the most dominating performances Ive ever seen as a coach [was] against Auburn, and against Ole Miss this year. But more than that, Leonards on track to graduate in May.Leonard was a great teammate. Every day he came to work. He was a joy to coach. Players love him. Little kids across the country emulate him, want to be like him. We know this is a tough decision for Leonard, but he has a bright future ahead of himself. The Tiger family wishes him the best. He will always be an LSU Tiger. Duke Jerseys From China .com) - The game was all punts and field goals before Kodi Whitfields catch. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Both Ohio State?and Michigan State?will be without key contributors on a cold, snowy afternoon at Spartan Stadium.Senior wide receivers Dontre Wilson and Corey Smith didnt travel with the No. 2 Buckeyes due to injury. It also appears an injured ankle will again sideline Michigan State standout defensive lineman Malik McDowell, who was not listed on the programs dress list after missing the game last week against Rutgers.Wilson is Ohio States third-leading receiver this season with 26 catches and five touchdowns, and hes also been a threat as rusher with 16 carries and a touchdown on the ground. He left the win over Maryland last week with an undisclosed injury, but the veteran wasnt listed during the week by coach Urban Meyer as a possibility to miss the trip to take on the Spartans. His absence, along with Smiths as he recovers from having pins removed from his injured wrist, will test the depth of Ohio States young receiving corps and likely put more pressure on H-back Curtis Samuel to get more involved offensively against the Spartans. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Hisashi Iwakumas sore neck nearly prevented the Mariners pitcher from making his scheduled start and continued to bother him throughout the night. The Mariners gave their right-hander two big reasons to stick it out -- a pair of long home runs by Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz.Another stellar outing from Seattles bullpen helped, too.Iwakuma pitched into the sixth inning for his 14th win and the Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3 on Saturday night for their seventh victory in eight games.I was OK to go today, but as the game progressed I started to feel stiffness, Iwakuma said through an interpreter. My body was starting to fly open. I wasnt as high as I wanted it to be. I kind of felt that throughout the third, fourth, fifth inning, but I was able to get out of jams.Iwakuma (14-7) allowed three runs on nine hits for his eighth win in the last nine starts. He struck out two and didnt walk a batter for the fifth time this season.Four Seattle relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Edwin Diaz retired three batters for his sixth save. Our bullpen was outstanding, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Very, very good and they needed to be tonight. We didnt have much room for error. Thats a good formula for a win.A day after squandering several scoring opportunities, the Mariners stranded two runners in the first and another in the third before breaking through.Cruz hit his 29th home run leading off the fourth inning. Seth Smith singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the fifth and Cano hit the next pitch from Kendall Graveman (8-8) over the center-field wall for his 26th homer. We have guys that can hit line drives also but homers are good, too, Cruz said. Whatever way you can score runs, theyre welcome.Khris Davis homered for the second consecutive day while Coco Crisp and Billy Butler had three hits apiece for Oakland.Graveman allowed four runs over six innings and lost for the second time in his past 14 starts.dddddddddddd He was pulled after 79 pitches. This year is a lengthy one for him so I dont think its a bad thing to cut it short, As manager Bob Melvin said, explaining his decision to pull Graveman. We had some good performances out of the bullpen. We had some guys rested come in.DAVIS MUSCLES UP AGAINDavis hit his 29th homer leading off the sixth, extending his career-high pace. CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Quinndary Weatherspoon knew Mississippi State needed a lift and was glad to provide it. He was also happy when his teammates chipped in.Weatherspoon scored 19 of his career-high 25 points in the first half to lead the Bulldogs to an 80-68 victory over Boise State at the Charleston Classic on Friday night. It was a welcome result after Mississippi State lost to UCF -- it trailed 47-19 in the first half -- on Thursday night in their opening game at TD Arena.I was just looking for openings and finding others out there, Weatherspoon said. I was trying to create for others. The result was a satisfying win for the Bulldogs (2-1), who will face UTEP for fifth place in the eight-team tournament. We did a really good job bouncing back, Mississippi State coach Ben Howland said.Weatherspoon was a main reason why. After Boise State tied the game at 18-all , Weatherspoon scored 11 straight points to help the Bulldogs build a six-point lead, 29-23.In the second half, all the Bulldogs got involved and grew the lead to 19 points on Weatherspoons steal and breakaway dunk.Boise State (1-2) could not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.Tyson Carter added 15 points for Mississippi State, who had all five starters go for double figures.Weatherspoon topped his old scoring mark of 24 points set against Vanderbilt last February.Boise State coach Leon Rice said his team struggled with its shooting touch and played a long stretch of the first half without starting forward Nick Duncan, who took an elbow to the head and needed seven stitches to close up a bloody gash.We hung in there, but with Nick going out and the foul trouble, it was difficult, he said.Weatherspoon, a quick, 6-foot-4 sophomore, made nine of 12 shots and added four steals and four rebounds.Chandler Hutchison and Paris Austin had 13 points each to top Boise State.BIG PICTUREMississippi State recovered from an awful effort against UCF -- the Bulldogs trailed by 28 points in the first half -- to defeat Boise State. There are still plenty of issues that need attention, however. The Bulldogs settled for way too many outside shots (they were just 2 of 15 from behind the arc the first 20 minutes) and post players Schneider Herard, Aric Holman and E.J. Datcher all struggled with their touch around the basket, combining to go 6 of 15 from the field against the Broncos.Boise State needs to find a second option when prime scorer Hutchison is off target, out of synch or on the bench with foul trouble as he was against Mississippi State. No one rose to the occasion for Boise State.HEY, I KNOW YOUThe Mississippi State-UTEP matchup will reunite good friends and L.A. rivals in Bulldogs coach Ben Howland and Miners coach Tim Floyd -- who battled each other in the West Coast, Howland as UCLAs coach and Floyd as USC leader. Its going to be a tough game, Howland said.INJURY WORRYQuinndary Weatherspoon went to the bench holding his left wrist. But after a quick look and some tape, Weatherspoon returned to the court. Despite the ice pack on his wrist, Weatherspoon said hed be ready to go for Sundays game.ITS NEVER OVERAfter Nick Duncan was stitched up, he returned to the court in a large, maroon bandage that looked like Sylvester Stallones famous head band worn by his Rambo character in First Blood. Yeah, it was kind of stylish, he said of his head band.UP NEXTMississippi State will play UTEP for fifth place at the Charleston Classic on Sunday.Boise State will play Western Michigan -- an all-Broncos matchup -- for seventh place at the Charleston Classic on Sunday. The mistake spat him into the wall where his Haas suffered irreparable damage to the left rear corner.Speaking about the incident, Grosjean said: From hero to zero in 24 hours. It was, Ben Stokes reasoned, the sort of day when England gained nothing but sunburn.A flat pitch and a strong batting line-up brought home what has been clear for a few weeks: England do not have the tools to win series in these conditions. As Stokes put it: Sometimes youve got to hold your hands up say they played really, really well. As weve known for some time, India are too good for them. Its not that England have played poorly. For fairly lengthy patches of most games - the possible exception being Mohali, where their inadequate first innings made the result almost inevitable from the first evening - they have fought well. But eventually, in most games, the difference in quality between the sides has told.It could happen again here. If England are unable to make inroads in the India batting early on the fourth day - and there is little sign that they will - they are likely to face somewhere around three sessions of batting to ensure they at least save this final match. If the pitch deteriorates - and there is little sign of that, either - that could prove tough. There were some encouraging moments on the third day. There was the wicket of Virat Kohli, dismissed for under 40 for the first time in the series, earned by Stuart Broad bowling round the wicket and producing a leg-cutter that Kohli played a little too early. The figures might not fully reflect it, but Broad has been Englands best seamer by some distance in this series. There was the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara who, Stokes believed, was unsettled by some short-pitched bowling which eventually led to him prodding at a wide one he would normally have left. I think maybe going a bit harder and shorter did make him play a ball he wouldnt necessarily play at most of the time, Stokes said. And there was Jos Buttler, charming a good-natured crowd by encouraging them to mimic him. And if that sounds like scant reason to take cheer, well, it was that sort of day. At least Buttlers humour kept spirits and energy levels high.Englands plans have been thwarted, in part, by their inability to gain reverse swing in this series. While they were able to generate lavish reverse at times in Bangladesh with the Kookaburra ball, they have been unable to gain anything like the same movement with the SG ball used in India. For a team banking on the strength of its seamers, it has been a killer blow.Thats probably been the most surprising thing, especially with how abrasive the surfaces have been, Stokes said. Weve kept the ball in really good condition but they go really soft easily out here compared to the Kookaburra in Bangladesh where we managed to get quite a lot. Its probably been a little bit of a shock we havent managed to find any.It probably pays to reserve judgement on Englands spinners after days like this. It is, after all, a surface on which the worlds top-rated bowler, R Ashwin, claimed 1 for 151. But we have seen enough of Liam Dawson to conclude that his selection has been a qualified success. While he rarely threatened, he was the most economical of Englands trio and, as a consequence, was trusted to more overs on the third day than the others. Without him, India might be close to parity already and England might need to survive for an extra session to salvage a draw.Adil Rashid was frustrating. Several times he beat the bat with sharply turning leg-breaks. On another occasion, he took the glove of Pujara before he scored and might have had him caught had he been given a short-leg. But when a bowler delivers as many release balls as Rashid, it is hard to justify the close fielders instead of protecting the boundaries. On such days, he looks desperately difficult to captain though it is intriguing that his best days on this tour have come when Saqlain Mushtaq has been in attendance as bowling coach. Either side of Saqlains stay, Rashid has been a disappointment.Moeen Ali bowled better. Gaining occasional turn, he appeared more willing to vary his pace and, until a poor final over, at least made the batsmen take a few risks - reverse sweeping or hitting over the top - to progress. But, having taken the only wicket in the morning session, he was taken off after one more over, given just a one-over spell in the afternoon session, and then brought back once the fourth-wicket partnership had taken root. It was puzzling captaincy.Alastair Cook didnt enjoy the best of days. As well as dropping another catch - a decision will have to be made over whether he still belongs in the slips; he is dropping at least as many as he is taking - he looked jaded when chasing balls in the field where his relative lack of energy contrasted with Joe Roots. Indeed, for periods on day two and three, Root has looked the more vocal and demonstrative of the two in the field. We may, perhaps, be witnessing a natural changing of the guard. There is no need for Cook to make an immediate decision over his future. With England not playing another Test until July, he has time to go home, reflect and ask himself if he still has the ambition to drive this team forward. If he is in any doubt over the answer, he should know it is time to quit. Root deserves the chance to settle in to the captaincy well ahead of the Ashes and neither in mid-series or mid-summer.Root has quite enough to worry about already. As if being the key batsman in all three formats is not burden enough - and remember, after an international summer that starts on May 5 and ends of September 29, England face one of the longest tours in recent memory, starting in October and finishing in April - he is also about to become a father. If England over-burden him, they risk both compromising his individual excellence and, perhaps, burn out.Such decisions can wait a few weeks; at least until the end of January. But increasingly Cooks resigned demeanour is contrasting with his young teams vigour. He may just need a break, but you do wonder if he still has the hunger required to deal with days like these. http://www.49ersrookiestore.com/ . RIO DE JANEIRO -- Andy Murray is one of the worlds best in his sport, a proud champion of the Olympics and an outspoken figure in the fight against drugs cheats.Aside from his support for Scottish independence from the rest of the United Kingdom a couple of years ago, there surely couldnt be a better choice of flag bearer for the British team at the Rio Games.Murrays role is not just about leading the?small Team GB delegation in the opening ceremony on Friday and keeping the Union Flag flying high.He will address the other British athletes once or twice and have the chance to inspire the less experienced and successful among them.Murray should provide the benchmark for the others, too, as he has effectively been made the symbol of what the British Olympic Association thinks is good about sport in the UK.From a public relations perspective, Murray is a sharp choice given the Lizzie Armitstead missed-drugs-test furore. Who better to try to move the agenda on before she is due to compete in the womens cycling road race on Sunday?Murray, who has three Grand Slam titles (including this years Wimbledon) to go with his 2012 Olympics gold, is a consummate professional, and the idea of him erring on World Anti-Doping Agencys whereabouts rule seems unlikely. Having the guy who has called for increased testing and transparency as a figurehead cannot be a bad thing. His diligence and work rate should also be a good example to young athletes, as hes known for the attention he pays to the physical side of his game and the time and effort he devotes to it.Murray is a player who has matured and made himself stand out from the crowd despite a lack of the flashy trappings of the famous and wealthy who reside at the top of their sports. He is a father, a husband, a dog lover and a fan of a range of other sports. In fact, looking closely at him, it is a wonder Team GB chef de mission Mark England and his panel considered anybody else.Murray wont be the only flag bearer from tennis in the ceremony; Rafael Nadal will also lead out Spain. Novak Djokovic, who has also arrived to play here when the sportts competition starts on Saturday, led Serbia at the 2012 Games in London.ddddddddddddIronically, the two other best players, Swiss Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, have pulled out of the competition,?and 4 of the top 10 highest-ranked players will be missing.Murray, unlike Nadal, was due to stay outside the athletes village during the Games because of the size of the entourage he has with him and his desire to focus on the event. The Spaniard has reportedly run up against the time-consuming issue of other athletes seeking autographs and selfies while he tries to go about his business. But Murray stayed in the village on Tuesday night and may spend more time there before finding some peace and quiet to focus on his game outside the commotion. He summed up his feelings for the Games after his first practice session in Rio on Tuesday. You are around the best athletes in the world and you want to perform well for your country and your teammates, he said.I remember in Beijing, although I didnt perform well, it was nice being surrounded by the best athletes in your country and seeing them come back with medals. It feels a lot more like a team environment and I have enjoyed that throughout my career.Other nations have gone a different route than Britain in selecting their flag bearers, with the U.S. picking Michael Phelps ?-- a character whose image has been a long way off squeaky clean (the swimmer has two DUIs on his record).Nicola Adams, who made history by becoming the first female Olympic boxing champion in 2012, was an alternative to Murray for the Team GB role and would also have represented some laudable values for British sport. But the Scots success, fame, conduct and credentials must have looked undeniable. Those involved in selecting him say he was brimming with pride when he was told about it, too, and the only thing that could take the edge off that would be the fact that wife Kim and daughter Sophia wont be here to see him parade with the team.
